They make you believe that losing fat is rocket science.
And it’s a smart move. It’s their business to make fat loss as complicated and overly expensive as possible
Think about it
They offer you a gym membership and a personal trainer just to supervise you doing weights, training on non-functional machines, exhausting yourself with high-intensity cardio, and coupling that with tons of supplements. They sell you the belief that you must take pre-workouts, protein, creatine, BCAA, and even fat-loss pills… And they make a ton of $$$ from it!
Most of that is totally unnecessary or even doesn’t work at all!
Let me bust the most common myths about losing fat
#1 Myth: Supplements will make you lose fat – There are no magic pills that will make you lose weight. Period. “Fitness companies” are desperate to sell you brand new supplements that are supposed to burn your fat in no time. Unfortunately, that’s bullshit. Multiple studies have shown that you can’t directly burn fat by consuming any chemical compounds unless you’re okay with mediocre results and severe side effects such as highly increased heart rate, high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver damage, and more…
To be fair, there are some safe, natural supplements like caffeine, green tea extract, or soluble fiber that can slightly help by improving your metabolism, curbing your appetite, or using more fat as fuel. However, their effects are not that significant and the main reason they work for some people is the placebo effect. People simply want them to work so badly, that they become more conscious of what they eat. And THAT makes most of the work.
We believe that supplements should be the last tool that you might want to use once you have all of the other, more important factors in place. That’s why we focus on proper training, a healthy lifestyle, and improving eating habits in the first place.
#2 Myth: Radical exercise regime is a must – Working hard on your fitness goals is something that we preach. But there is a huge difference between working hard and working TOO HARD. Pushing way beyond the optimal intensity and volume is in the best case counterproductive. Excessive training won’t make you lose much fat faster and it’s not sustainable in the long run. It oftentimes leads to frustration, persistent muscle soreness, and overuse injuries that will limit your progress.
In the worst case, it might lead to serious disorders like compulsive exercising. It’s when you’re punishing yourself by doing extreme routines, constantly feeling like you need to “burn” or “get rid of” more calories and feel bad about yourself. Overtraining does more harm than good.
That’s why we make sure to provide you with optimal routines and workout schedules adjusted to your current level, and carefully select the most effective, yet achievable exercises for you to follow.
#3 Myth – Intense cardio is necessary to get in shape – it’s a common misconception that cardio is the best way to go to lose weight. While it might be effective to burn a lot of calories in a short period of time, it also has a BIG drawback to it. Focusing mainly on cardio is a double-edged sword. Why? Because cardio doesn’t stimulate your muscles to grow. As a result, you’re going to lose a significant amount of muscle mass along with fat.
I’m pretty sure your goal is to achieve an athletic physique rather than go from “fat” to “skinny”… And even that second option is a bit tricky with just cardio! According to research, muscle has a higher metabolic rate than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you are at rest.
Conclusion? Don’t just focus on reducing weight and burning calories. Focus on high-quality resistance training that will stimulate your muscles and burn fat at the same time. #4 Myth: Gym is more effective than calisthenics – we told just you in the previous paragraph that you should focus on resistance training rather than cardio to lose fat. Somebody might ask: why don’t just go to the gym then? Isn’t it the best way to do resistance training? Well… not really.
In theory, calisthenics can be as effective for fat loss as weightlifting. However, our practical experience suggests that calisthenics done right is far MORE EFFECTIVE than weightlifting. It all comes down to progressive overload. To put it simply – progressive overload happens when you gradually increase the difficulty of your workouts over time. This gives your muscles a signal that they need to get bigger and stronger to deal with that greater load. It can be achieved in numerous ways: increasing resistance (adding more weight, doing harder variations of a given exercise), doing more reps, increasing weekly training, and so on.
Calisthenics has an advantage over the gym because it offers an almost infinite amount of exercises, progressions, and ways to progressively overload your muscles. Proper calisthenics training involves mainly compound movements that should be the foundation of your training. It’s also way more fun and rewarding to learn new exercises and skills rather than just increasing weight over and over again, not to mention the incredible side benefits of calisthenics: improving balance, coordination, mobility, and overall greater control of your body.
